Established in 1971, The Kitchen is one of New York City's oldest spaces for alternative art. Originally housed in the kitchen space at the Mercer Arts Center, a decrepit hotel-turned-concert venue and artist space, the collective primarily focused on video and music-based art. In 1973, The Kitchen relocated to a loft on the corner of Broome St. and Wooster St. in lower Manhattan, where they remained until 1985. Their cross-disciplinary programming and propensity for the avant-garde have led to their continued status as a home for underground art.
